The Art and Science of Theater is an interdisciplinary site that takes
you on a journey through many different aspects of theater. You will be
taken through all aspects of theater from the architecture of the theaters
or the impact theater has had on the sports and health care fields.
Theater is an amazing way of expressing everything from feelings to
political standpoints. It is also something that no matter what your talent
is, you can showcase it in theater. You don't have to be an actor to show
your talent in theater. If you are talented in building things or such
things as publicity you can make your talents known in the world of theater.
Theater is one of the broadest fields there is. It does not matter
what your interest is, most likely there is a way to tie it to the world of
theater.
Recent West End and Broadway
productions such as Phantom of the Opera, Sunset Boulevard, and The Lion
King have become popular, in part, because of their use of technology for
the creation of spectacular effects. Most of the basic techniques used
in the modern theatre were developed or were polished in the sixteenth,
seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. At the beginning of the seventeenth
century opera evolved from a courtly and scholarly activity to a popular
entertainment, in part, because of its use technology for the creation
of scenic spectacle.

The Natya Shastra is the oldest surviving
text on stagecraft in the world. It is believed to have been
written by Bharata Muni in about the 2nd century BC. However
there are scholars who believe that it may have been written by various
authors at different times. t is believed that the Natya Shastra is based
upon the much older Natya Sutras. Unfortunately there are no
surviving copies of the Natya Sutras so we have no way to know for sure.
The Natya Shastra is incredibly wide in its scope. It covers
stage-design, music, dance, makeup, virtually every aspect of stagecraft.
It is very important to the musician because it is the only text which
gives such detail about the music and instruments
of the period.
