City Garage
- The answer is simple. There's nothing else
like it. Nothing else combines spoken word, gesture, visual image, sound,
light, movement, and music the same way. It happens right before your eyes.
You have a human being in front of you, quite alive, working very hard to
make you see something, understand something. Feel something. It happens in
the moment. In the dark. In the company of strangers. When it works well, it
is magical. You're caught up in something, a human act of community, of
tale-telling, an acting out of our history and of our present, an imagining
of our future, just like it has been done countless tens of thousands of
times before in countless circumstances of performances done by the few, the
actors, in front of the many, us.
- At City Garage we try to produce plays and
playwrights that are usually not very well known or often performed here.
There is a certain prejudice towards European work, not just because our
Artistic Director is French -- although that's also a reason -- but because
it's hard to see much contemporary European writing on L.A. stages, or even
to see many wonderful plays from the last thirty years that have been hardly
performed. We also do interesting contemporary American playwrights, but
ones that aren't performed as much as we think they should be.

institutes, prisons, hospitals, etc. using myths, legends and sometimes,
jointly devised work with participants. IROKO also uses traditional African
theatre art forms to explore social issues, especially issues that are

Vital
Theatre
- Since May 1990 George Dillon's Vital Theatre has produced six acclaimed
solo shows: Judgement, Stunning the Punters, Hell & Other Tales, The
Remembrance of Edgar Allan Poe, the award-winning Graft - Tales of an Actor
and The Gospel of Matthew plus a revival of Decadence and a production of
Hamlet. Vital Theatre is avowedly anti-naturalistic. The main
influence is the theatre of Steven
Berkoff. From both aesthetic principle and a shortage of financial
resources, Vital Theatre is a 'poor' theatre, minimising the use of set and
props and focusing on the actor. From 2000, Vital Theatre will be
touring permanently.
