Acting on the
Web
-
What is acting? We believe acting
is a "state of mind." An assumed and practiced mental attitude where
you pretend, make believe, that you possess another persons life situations;
another person's problems, successes and failures, hopes and dreams, happiness
and tragedies. A "state of mind" where you allow your thoughts,
your body and your feelings to act out imaginary and scripted realities,
in such a manner that an audience will suspended its disbelief and empathize
with you and the given situations.

New School
Acting
-
What is NEW SCHOOL ACTING? New
School Acting is the first major change in technique and basic theory since
the Industrial Revolution set the stage for Stanislavski and his psycho-intellectual
based acting system. New School Acting is a breakthrough, a complete departure
from an almost seventy year old tradition in American acting. It ushers
in a whole new era in acting, one which finds the primary direction of
acting going from the old school ego based acting to the new school's empathy
based acting, a healthier and more creative style of ac ting. While many
in the acting community have been restless to move on, until the development
of these new techniques, the tools were not available.

Teaching
Acting Technique and Building a Character Through Cinema
-
This curriculum unit will be directed
toward second and third year acting students at The Cooperative Arts and
Humanities High School. Two prerequisites for this course are: (1) possession
of basic acting skills and experience, and (2) strong commitment both to
the individual study of acting and to the concept of theatre as a collaborative
art form. Prior formal classwork will have included Shakespeare, Anton
Chekhov, Edward Albee, and August Wilson. My students will have a strong
background in improvisation, story-telling, and play and character analysis.
My main focus will be an emphasis on acting technique and building a character
based on what has come to be known as the Stanislavski system.
Teaching
Shakespeare Through Exercises on Acting and on the Basic Emotions
-
by Gerald Grow, PhD An original WWW
publication. Abstract. This article describes a college Shakespeare course
employing participatory methods. Students carried out a series of exercises
designed to put them in touch with the basic emotions and to approach the
plays in terms of those emotions. Students carried out other exercises
derived from actor training--including vocal warmups and memorizing and
delivering two speeches. Various experiments are described which attempted
to engage students more immediately with the plays. Plays mentioned: Romeo
and Juliet, King Lear, and The Winter's Tale.

... from the Webmaster
I often use the criteria for the various
personality inventories and personality typing (Meyer-Briggs Type Indicator,
Kiersey Temperament Sorter, etc) as a way to think about creating/developing
characters from a script - I also used information about Personality Disorders
to help kids develop the characters in such plays as Cagebirds, Marat/Sade,
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, Clockwork Orange, Blue/Orange, etc....
